Fanime, Day 3 (Part 2): DigDug World
As I mentioned in the previous post, David cosplayed on Day 3 and I “handled” him.
If you’re not familiar with cosplay, the handler is just like the handler for a big name celebrity; they help the person of interest get through crowds, organize accessories, and help maintain the appearance. I wasn’t the best since I lost David a few times in the crowds, but I did place the pooka (stuffed toy modeled after a bad guy in the DigDug games) in places while other photographers could got shots of him in costume.
Sunday was supposed to have an all-cosplay gathering out in front of the convention center but it didn’t seem to pan out. As always, there were a ton of photographers and cosplayers out front, posing and snapping shots, but not an official event like the one we had both attended Friday (Day 1). So David and I hung out and David getting his picture taken about every 10 minutes by wandering photographers.
Every time David got a complement on his costume, I felt a personal note of pride since I had been the person to make most of his suit. I made the hip pads and air capsule loops, his elbow pads, shoulder pads, attached belt loops, belt, and chest chevrons. I also made it so every piece was detachable with either Velcro or snaps so that the whole suit could be hand washed.
David constructed his drill pump out of foam and a cardboard tube, painted a prop helmet, and made the glove design out of carefully cut colored duck tape. =] The pooka was a Christmas present to me that seemed to *miraculously* work well for his cosplay ^_~
Regardless, both he and I had a great time cosplaying. David was really in character though only two to three dozen people verbally recognized him. The impressive thing, was two people actually called him either Taizo Hori or Hori, not just “hey, aren’t you that guy from DigDug?”, which is really impressive.
I have to say though, having David carrying the pooka really helped people recognize him. He got for more recognition on Sunday when he was holding the pooka than when he was holding his incredible drill.
All in all, I would totally cosplay again with David and we already have several ideas for next year. Only one idea though relies on me really getting my sewing machine out (which makes me sad, I had a lot of fun constructing everything). =]
Scorpio (Dark Humor)
Had to draw a version in my style of his tantrum in Dig Dug Digging Strike…
Because he’s throwing a tantrum on the chair in front of the tv. About his son. Best father….?
